The fortress of Tetovo



The fortress of Tetovo is in the top of the Baltepe, with an altitude of 803m, with a height of 220-150m, and with a surface of 108.000 square meters.

The builders of the fortress had foreseen this strategic position, because a huge part of the Polog Valley could be controlled. The fortress of Tetovo was built in 1820, from Adurahman Pasha. According to some oral data, the construction of this monument was begun by Rexhep Pasha, the father of Abdurahman Pasha. The construction period lasted for 20 years.

This cultural monument presents a unique artistry. It has a complex composition; the interior has five palaces (sarays), huge kitchens and a well in the middle of the fortress. It represents the typical ottoman architecture. During different wars, it suffered much destruction.
